History

Circles of Justice (COJ) began as Chico Youth Court offering a diversion alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system for middle and high school teens who are first time offenders of misdemeanor or lesser crimes in Butte County. As the program evolved organizers came to understand that the court style approach we had adopted was inconsistent with the latest thinking on restorative justice.  Responding to the revised understanding of restorative justice, COJ developed a program inspired by the work of the International Institute for Restorative Practices.  Combined with our updated model we have opened the program up to all members of the community seeking to convert conflict into improved relationships and deeper understandings of ourselves and one another.
